Automotive Wi-Fi Reviewed by Walt Mossberg

The AutoNet Mobile in-car WiFi, has been around for a while now, and is even being offered as a dealer installed option for most Chrysler models. It was just a matter of time before it would make it to the attention of “main stream” geeks and get a review from the Wall Street Journal’s Personal Technology Columnist, Walt Mossberg.

Walt reviewed the unit in late 2008 and found the service to be a good solution to mobile email and web surfing but too slow to handle anything like streaming videos.

AutoNet Mobile recently partnered with Delphi in an effort to harden the design of their wireless router and to sell the technology straight to the manufacturers to use as an OEM option, not a dealer installed option.

You can read Walt’s full review on the WSJ site, here.

My Favorite TED Talk: Are Schools Killing Creativity?

The TED (stands for technology, entertainment, and design) Conference, is held annually in Long Beach, CA. More than a thousand people attend and the event sells out a year in advance. Oh, and it costs $6,000 to attend and you must be invited. The presenters, the “world’s leading thinkers and doers”, are limited to 18 minutes. All the presentations are videoed and made available over a period of time for free. Actually, BMW is one of the major sponsors that make the recordings available online.

I surf the TED site from time to time to see if I can round out my cultural side. Most of the presentations are over the top for me and I have only found about 10 that I watched all the way through and felt like I was the better for it. This post is about my favorite presentation from TED.

This presentation is made by Sir Ken Robinson and is entitled “Are Schools Killing Creativity”. The bulk of his presentation was about how schools try to make students conform to a rigid set of rules and if they don’t, then there must be something wrong with them. I like his British humor but the hook for me was a story he told towards the end of the presentation about a girl that would not fit in. When he told the story about the dancer I could not help but think about young “gear heads” that also do not fit. By the time a post secondary educator gets these students a lot of them have been beat up pretty bad by the system.

It really made me think about the traditional education system.  Well, you take a listen and see what you think. Remember you can post comments to this post by simply registering with the site.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs Interview

On June 27th Bill Gates said good bye to his colleagues at Microsoft as he officially “retired”. He now plans to work full time with his foundation, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has gone on record as saying he plans to give virtually all his fortune away. Hum… Start and run a company that produces a good product at a fair price, make a fortune and then give it away to try and make the world a better place. Now that is capitalism at its best!

If you are involved in computers you know tie significance of this man. He, and a hand full of other “geeks”, started the development of the modern day computer systems just a little over 30 years ago. Bill Gates and his counterpart at Apple, Steve Jobs, were the early pioneers and still have a lot of input into future digital technologies.

On May 30, 2007 these two men were interviewed by Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg at the “All Things Digital Conference” also know as D5. I personally found it fascinating to listen to these two men talk about the future of the computer industry. I think it gives us an idea of what to expect in the way of upcoming digital systems. It is only logical that many of the technologies they talk about will make their way into the automotive industry.

For those true geeks (like me) I have a link below to the transcript of the Gates / Jobs Interview along with the full audio and a highlights video.

An iPhone Key Fob?

Looks like the folks at Dephi have been come up with the ultimate key fob, an iPhone! While it is in the experimental stage, they can crank the car, perform some bi-directional control and display basic diagnostic information on the phone.

This is all done through a web application. Check out the video.
