In 1968 Andy Warhol made this now famous statement: “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Well, I think I got my 15 minutes today (closer to 5 minutes), at least as far as geek fame goes.

I am pushing hard to get my upcoming book edited and decided to call into the “Leo Laporte: The Tech Guy” radio show. This is a call-in type show about digital technology that is broadcast live on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-5pm EDT. The host, Leo Laporte, is broadcasting out of his studio in Petaluma, CA and the show is syndicated with the Premier Radio Network into over 60 major USA markets. The show is also available one week later as a MP3 download and an additional audience listens to the show that way.

I pitched the idea to Leo about having his audience help with the book edit. Leo looked at my site on the air and really praised what I was doing. An audio clip of my time on the show is available below. This is a big deal for a geek.

Digital Literacy Project's Page View Statistics

To understand how big of a deal this is, look at the page view statistics graph for the Digital Literacy Project web site on March 22, 2009. The page views went from about 75-100 a day to 1975 views on the day of the show (the big spike to the right). Wow! At least I got a chance to test my server. It didn’t crash, which is a good thing.

Now I have to see what the final results will be. Will I end up getting some serious help with the edit? So far I have a lot of traffic, and a few offers to help. My gut feeling is this exposure on Leo’s show will pay off in many ways for a long time.

I am writing a book about the application of digital technology within the automotive service industry. The book could be used as a college level textbook, a reference book, or even used for a self-paced study.

This has turned into about a 3 year quest, but I will soon have the book complete. Part of the challenge is that I chose to self-publish, and up to this point I have done everything myself, including the actual page layout. But now I need help!

I need to get the book’s content edited. While spelling and grammar is important, in my case I am looking more for a “technical edit”. I need all the chapters read by at least one person (hopefully more) with a reasonable level of expertise in the chapter’s subject matter.

If you can help, even with one chapter (10-14 pages) click here for more details.

When Honda dropped the CR-X, I mourned for weeks. I ran an independent Honda repair shop for 18 years and Honda’s CR-X was a dear old friend. I made a lot of money working on them and I ran with a pack of guys that would go punish their CR-Xs on an autocross course on Sunday and drive it to work on Monday, no problems.

When I saw a picture of Honda’s CR-Z hybrid concept something about it really got my juices flowing. I think it is my age, but I just don’t get as excited about new models as I once did. But there was something different about the CR-Z, like it was an old firend that I once new… I think it is the striking modernized resemblance to the CR-X. It is like the CR-X has been reincarnated. Welcome home, old friend!

It is spring break at GTCC, where I teach and I am slogging away at my book project. This has been over a two year project that is wearing me down, but I am determined not to quit. I will see this through and the Digital Literacy Project will make a difference!

Over the past I have built many web sites and started two podcasts. I have probably spent well over 1000 hours doing this with some fairly significant out of pocket expenses. You would have to say, up to this point, that my online projects have been failures; however, I am looking at it as a big learning experience.

This morning I came across the documentary “Failure – The Secret to Success” which is part of Honda’s “Dream the Impossible” series. I needed the message. It reminded my that out of failure comes new knowledge that will help you be successful.
