Where cars and computers collide

My Life as a Venn Diagram

Around 1880 John Venn, a British logician and philosopher, developed a simple graphical way to represent relationships between two or more groups. Today this technique is known as the Venn diagram. A Venn diagram would represent two groups as two circles that overlap. The area where the two circles overlap represents a group that shares a relationship with both groups.

While a Venn diagram does a great job of explaining the relationship of statistical groups, it also does a great job of explaining my life.

Venn Diagram For My Early Years

For most of my life, at least my adult life, I have been passionate about cars and computers. That is my world. So as the Venn diagram above depicts, most of my life revolves around the implementation of computers in the automotive service industry. There are plenty of people that know more about cars than I do. There are also plenty of people that know more about computers than I do. But I don’t think there are many that know as much about both topics as I do.

Cars

I was one of those kids that would take his toys apart just to see how they worked. I didn’t tear toys up. I took them apart, put them back together, and they worked. I could build a small block Chevy engine before I had my driver’s license and I was probably the only 14-year old kid that knew the significance to “1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.” While I almost went to college to study mechanical engineering, I just liked cars too much. So I have made a living in the automotive service industry my entire life.

Computers

As soon as the first personal computers hit the streets, I was fascinated by them. I had to have one. I paid about $2000 for my first personal computer, an Apple IIe. This computer wasn’t even equipped with a hard drive and you had to insert a disc just to run an application program. I set up spreadsheets to handle payroll at my shop and used it to track inventory. From that first computer until today, I still work hard to understand new and emerging digital technologies.

While tonight was the first time I drew out a graphical representation of my life, I have subconsciously and instinctively applied this filter to about everything I do. A good example is this website. I work hard to keep on focus so that the site does not cover random automotive information or random digital information. I try to keep it in the context of digital technology within the automotive service industry.

Venn Diagram For My Later Years

When I started writing this post I though of my life’s Venn diagram as a two group diagram. In the process of writing and thinking about this topic I realized that in the last 10 years I have added another passion, education. So, I had to go back to Photoshop and make another graphic. I had to add a third circle.

My passion for education and particularly instructional design for online classes is coming on strong and deserves to be in my Venn diagram. This should be it. I plan on using my God-given talents in these three areas for the foreseeable future. My plan is to use the Digital Literacy Project as my medium to use these talents.

PS: After I posted this, I decided to add the 3-group Venn diagram to my blog’s sidebar. It looks pretty cool.

Just Finished a Complete DLP Site Make Over!

Just finished up about a weeks worth of work doing a make over for the DLP website. The look is similar but I did a lot of work on the back end and registration system. I am trying to prepare the site for the delivery of an online course. I have it all pretty much worked out.

Gotta get some shut eye… At least tomorrow is  Saturday.

My 15 Minutes of Geek Fame!

In 1968 Andy Warhol made this now famous statement: “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Well, I think I got my 15 minutes today (closer to 5 minutes), at least as far as geek fame goes.

I am pushing hard to get my upcoming book edited and decided to call into the “Leo Laporte: The Tech Guy” radio show. This is a call-in type show about digital technology that is broadcast live on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-5pm EDT. The host, Leo Laporte, is broadcasting out of his studio in Petaluma, CA and the show is syndicated with the Premier Radio Network into over 60 major USA markets. The show is also available one week later as a MP3 download and an additional audience listens to the show that way.

I pitched the idea to Leo about having his audience help with the book edit. Leo looked at my site on the air and really praised what I was doing. An audio clip of my time on the show is available below. This is a big deal for a geek.

Digital Literacy Project's Page View Statistics

Digital Literacy Project's Page View Statistics

To understand how big of a deal this is, look at the page view statistics graph for the Digital Literacy Project web site on March 22, 2009. The page views went from about 75-100 a day to 1975 views on the day of the show (the big spike to the right). Wow! At least I got a chance to test my server. It didn’t crash, which is a good thing.

Now I have to see what the final results will be. Will I end up getting some serious help with the edit? So far I have a lot of traffic, and a few offers to help. My gut feeling is this exposure on Leo’s show will pay off in many ways for a long time.

I am Seeking Help With Editing the DLP Book

I am writing a book about the application of digital technology within the automotive service industry. The book could be used as a college level textbook, a reference book, or even used for a self-paced study.

This  has turned into about a 3 year quest, but I will soon have the book complete. Part of the challenge is that  I chose to self-publish, and up to this point I have done everything myself, including the actual page layout. But now I need help!

I need to get the book’s content edited. While spelling and grammar is important, in my case I am looking more for a “technical edit”. I need all the chapters read by at least one person (hopefully more) with a reasonable level of expertise in the chapter’s subject matter.

If you can help, even with one chapter (10-14 pages) click here for more details.

Honda CR-Z, The Prodigal Son (CR-X) is Coming Home!

When Honda dropped the CR-X, I mourned for weeks. I ran an independent Honda repair shop for 18 years and Honda’s CR-X was a dear old friend. I made a lot of money working on them and I ran with a pack of guys that would go punish their CR-Xs on an autocross course on Sunday and drive it to work on Monday, no problems.

When I saw a picture of Honda’s CR-Z hybrid concept something about it really got my juices flowing. I think it is my age, but I just don’t get as excited about new models as I once did. But there was something different about the CR-Z, like it was an old firend that I once new… I think it is the striking modernized resemblance to the CR-X. It is like the CR-X has been reincarnated. Welcome home, old friend!
